Vintage 10pc Wedgwood Demitasse, Red Cliffs Scene, Early 20thc
Listed here is a lovely 10 piece demitasse set by Wedgwood, circa early 1900s. We could only find the pattern number which is A7273. The number 7 is below the pattern number which may indicate shape as we found a different shaped demitasse cup also in this pattern. It is simply marked Wedgwood Etruria England. Etruria was the name given to Josiah Wedgwood's new factory at the Ridge House estate located at New Castle-under-Lyme and Hanley in 1766. There he had built not only his new factory but a village for his workers.
This set seems to be transferware. It is a deep pink color, quite often referred to as red. On one side of the cup, it features a country scene and hillside. A building is housed at the top of the cliff or hill. A country gentleman stands in the forefront. On the other side of the cup are dramatic cliffs. Three people seem to be walking through the passageway. The saucers depict a different view of the cliffs and a river running in between. A couple sits on the river bank while another gentleman tends to his horse. Their costume or dress is reminiscent of perhaps the Rennaissance era but their hats look almost Asian. The saucers all have a different view but all on the same theme, fishing along the riverbank and some farming. Castles and buildings are in the background. I have taken close ups for your review. If anyone is familiar with this pattern, please email in and we will post all information received with our thanks. This pattern is really intriguing.
There are only two flaws. One of the cups has a small chip at the base and one saucer has a small chip on the rim. The other 8 pieces are in excellent condition with still vivid color. Some minor crazing.
