W&R Carlton Ware Barge 12" Wall Plaque #C1194

Barge pattern is one of Carlton Ware Chinoiserie school of patterns that where first introduced as far back as 1915. The Barge pattern is a water scene with water lilies, bridges, pagodas and barges all over a deep mottle blue ground which is verging on cobalt.

It just teams with characters, in the foreground two ladies recline in comfort as a Bargeman propels them through rafts of blooming lilies.

Near the top is a two story pagoda, on the ground floor 3 characters sit chatting, while a single character inhabits the second floor. There are three factory made holes in the back rim so this magical plaque can easily be hung on the wall.

The pattern number “2519” is printed by hand on the back in black paint. It also has the black stamped Wiltshire and Robison maker’s mark stamped in black ink under the glaze. This mark was in use from 1894 until 1927. The pattern number “2519” was introduced into service circa in 1921. This gives us a production window of between 1921 and 1927.

This very impressive measures in with a 30.5 cm (12”) diameter.

Condition

It is in EXCELLENT condition; there are no chips, cracks or repairs and NO crazing. There is no wear to the magnificent blue lustre ground and NO wear to the hand painted motif. There is just a HINT of wear to the gilding on the rim – and I am not exaggerating when I say just a HINT. This is very close to AS NEW condition. I would have as a guess that this beauty has lived the easy life of an art work.

Everything about this plaque shrieks quality, from the pattern to the size and the vintage, this is an prominent piece of early twentieth century art from Carlton Ware’s glory days.
