The Story Behind The BSG Commissioned 100 Piece 'The Cross' Guitars...
In late 2003, Eric McKenna of Boogie Street Guitars agreed to purchase 86 of the 100 USA Custom Shop Dimebag Darrell Signature Southern Cross Guitars from Washburn Guitars, Chicago. The Southern Cross guitars were made slowly - and sporadically - over 2004. When Dimebag left Washburn in the Fall of 2004, Washburn had a 6 month contract timetable to complete the run of 100 Custom Southern Cross guitars. Time ran out and only 84 total Southern Cross guitars were made with BSG marketing well over 70 of the 84.
With Dime's untimely and very, very sad passing, the Southern Cross guitars became the most sought after Signature Dimebag Darrell guitar to this point in time. Eric took notice of the extreme demand for the Southern Cross guitar - worldwide - and the amount of Dimebag fans who wanted the Southern Cross but were not able to obtain one of the 84 USA Customs made because of timing or price point.
Also, it was clear that the thousands of photos taken of Dime with his Southern Cross guitars coupled with the history of Southern Cross guitars in relation to Pantera's tour with Black Sabbath in 1998/99... was going to yeild a strong demand for a extremely faithful replication of the Southern Cross guitar and just as important... a faithful replication that was affordable to most players.
So, in the summer of 2006, Eric, with the aid of Washburn, sent one of his personal USA Custom Shop Southern Cross guitars to Washburn's Korean Facility. So - not only were the 'Cross' designs delivered to the factory - the facotry had an ORIGINAL Southern Cross guitar to work with from a replication standpoint. The Result? Two proto type guitars delivered to BSG in the Fall of 2006 that were - utterly AMAZING. One with the traditional flame and one with a quilt.
Based on the quality, fit & finish of those two prototypes, Eric immediately commissioned a run of 100 guitars. These guitars were to be simply called - 'The Cross'. These guitars replicate the original USA Custom Shop Southern Cross in many, many ways including the natural maple flame top with ebony inlaid cross with abalone tips, Dimebucker/59 Pickup combination, Schaller Floyd Rose Trem, Striped ebony fretboard with STUNNING & COLORFUL abalone Iron Cross inlay, Natural mahogany back and neck with headstock volute - even a similar headstock back logo. Eric decided that 'The Cross' guitar needed to have an easily identifiable mark which would immediately indicate 'The Cross' from the original USA Washburn Southern Cross guitars. So, besides Dime's name missing from the headstock of 'The Cross' guitars, Eric had the factory start the abalone Iron Cross inlay on the 1st fret on 'The Cross' - as opposed to the 3rd fret like the USA Southern Cross guitars.
So there you have it - in a nutshell. Boogie Street Guitars - Washburn's premier dealer and Washburn's Largest Custom dealer - delivers 'The Cross'. A faithful replication of one of Washburn's most legendary guitars - played by one of this generations greatest players.
IMPORTANT: We are NOT selling 'numbers' within the run of 100. We initially had reservations and pre-orders for BSG customers who reserved certain numbers, etc. We continue to fill these preorders. We will provide the lowest number available to the auction winner. However - once again - please note - we can not pick out numbers within the run of 100. It's not possible at this point in the sales process of this run of 100. Rest assured - each CROSS is amazing - handpicked and inspected by BSG's Eric McKenna and Fred Kowalo. THE LEGAL STUFF: 'THE CROSS' Guitars is *NOT* a Signature Dimebag Darrell Guitar. Dimebag parted ways with USMusic in the Fall of 2004. Currently, Dean guitars makes 'official' Dimebag Darrell guitars in many different designs.
