H-Frame Easels
- H-Frame easels are sturdy and solid due to their rectangular frame and rectangular bases
- Some models are appropriate for very large canvases
- Some H-Frame easels will allow a forward tilt, and some have crank adjustments
- Some H-Frame easels have multiple paint tray features that give artists the flexibility to work large or small on the same easel
- Many types of H-Frame easels can be knocked down for easy storage and transport, but please note they are heavier and clumsier in their collapsed state

How to Furnish Your Studio
If we compare other fields, there is an amazing difference
in the thought process on purchasing artist equipment.
First lets look at the amateur or hobbyist.
- The Golfer - $800.00 in a set of clubs, $85.00 in a pair
of shoes, $20.00 in a pair of gloves and the money in
tees and balls is endless. Add to that the daily fee to play
of $20.00 to $300.00, and that's just for one day.
- The Hunter - $900.00 to $1,500.00 for a gun, at least
$500.00 for appropriate clothing, and add on the
expense of ammunition, license fees and travel.
- The Fisherman - Whoa, this gets big time! I know
people that have $3,500.00 to $5,000.00 invested in
their fishing gear. Again, add the license fees, the travel
expense, and the boat.
- The Seamstress - A good machine runs $1,200.00 and
that is only the start. The attachments, the supplies and
material, the cost just keeps going up!
Now, take a look at professionals. Wow! The average Auto
Mechanic, Plumber, or Electrician has more than $4,000
worth of equipment in the back of their pick-up truck.
Add to that the cost of the truck or van, insurance and
travel expenses. Extend that now to the Doctor or
Dentist and the numbers are out of sight!
Compared to many other avenues, getting started in art as
an amateur or as a professional is really quite reasonable.
The easel is, or can be, the one single greatest investment.
So, what should you look for? You can purchase a table
easel, a modest tripod easel, or go all the way to a deluxe
studio easel. Like a new suit or coat, you need to select
the easel that fits you and your work. Easels are designed
in a variety of styles to accommodate many different ways
artists work. Be sure you select an easel that works for you!
Styles
Basically there are only five styles of easels. The Table
Easel, the Tripod Easel, the Box or French Style Easel,
the Lyre (A-frame) Easel, and the Studio (H-frame) Easel.
There are a number of variations to each of these that
offer different tilt settings for pastelists or watercolorists, different storage options and size capabilities. |

Who is Martin Universal Design?
Martin Universal Design, Inc. supplies the Art Material Industry with a very complete range of quality artist accessories, materials and tools. To name

What is so special about Martin?
Martin Universal Design, Inc. began in 1963, by Dennis Kapp the current CEO and Chairman. The company incorporated the wholesale, importing, and manufacturing
activities of Northwest Blue Print, a company founded in 1946 by Elmer Kapp, Dennis’ father. Elmer, who has since retired, is blind. He began Northwest
Blue Print with his partner, a black Lab Leader Dog, and a suitcase of drafting tools. Eventually the Kapp family purchased Mr. Ray Martin’s business
and his name and Northwest Blue Print’s wholesale, importing, and manufacturing activities, became the Martin Instrument Company. Ray Martin was the
first designer and maker of drafting templates in the United States. The name Martin stood for quality in the drafting instrument industry, and that
is the reason the Kapp family retained it. To this date, the Kapp family proudly continues to carry on the tradition of only inscribing the Martin name
on to the highest quality artist accessories and furniture. In 1983, the Kapp family acquired Universal Industries, the makers of top quality artists
and display easels. Merging Universal Industries with Martin Instrument brought the corporation of today, Martin Universal Design, Inc.
