WELSH CARVED WOOD LOVESPOON

DRAGON, CIRCLE, HANDSHAKE

The custom of giving lovespoons in Wales dates back to the 17th century.

These spoons were ornately carved for a loved ond or friend.

The lovespoons originated from the "Cawl" (soup) spoon. Decorative carvings were added.

Each symbol has a special Meaning.  Dragon = protection, 

Cross = Faith, Two Hearts in Love, Knots = Togetherness

Handshake for friendship.

 

 length 8-3/8", 21.3 cm,  *  greatest width 2 5/8", 6.6 cm

grain patern and wood colouration vary from piece to piece.
