William Merritt Chase
William Merritt Chase was an American painter and teacher of Impressionism. He also established the Chase School, which later would become Parsons The New School for Design.
Chase was born in Williamsburg, Indiana. In 1861, he was employed as a salesman in the family business. In 1869, he enrolled in the National Academy of design under Lemuel Willmarth, who was a student of artist Jean-Leon Jerome. In 1870, his families declining fortune forced Chase to move from New York to Missouri. He worked to help support his family and became active in the St. Louis Art community. After winning many prizes for his paintings at local exhibitions, he decided to exhibit his first painting at the National Academy in 1871. With an interest from wealthy St. Louis art collectors he was able to visit Europe for two years. In Europe, he studied at the Academy of fine arts in Munich. After painting and traveling for several years in Europe he returned to the United States in the summer of 1878. He opened a studio in New York and became a member of the Tilers, a group of artists and authors where he met some notable friends: Winslow Homer, Arthur Quartley and Augustine Saint Gaudens.
William Merritt Chase was a successful
painter, highly regarded teacher and devoted family man. He died on October 25, 1916 in his New York townhouse. Today, his paintings can be seen in most major museums in the United States. |
