Up for auction is a VERY rare example of a famous American Revolutionary War hero's autograph - William Dawes - who was involved with Paul Revere's famous ride to notify everyone the British were coming!!! The autograph is a genuine, (but somewhat faded), signature in red ink that was very difficult to photograph (The banknote was also inside a hard-plastic sleeve at the time it was photographed). The Dawes signature in red ink is done above the black ink scribbled signature of R. Cranch (Richard Cranch - brother in law to Abigail Adams; having married her sister Mary) ! Despite fading with age, the red-ink autograph of William Dawes is actually a little crisper then the photo suggests. This is an awesome $7 colonial banknote of Massachusettes, dated May 5, 1780 ; with a statement that it can be redeemed as late as 1786...As mentioned - one signature is from Richard Cranch. Next there is a clear signature of William Dawes (though fading) above Cranch's...and then one of Peter Boyer on the other side of the banknote. The rare phenomena of finding banknotes autographed/signed by William Dawes is explained in an issue of "The Journal of Antiques and Collectables," in the December 2002 issue - in a story titled "Historic Paper Money" by James Johnston. There is actually a site www.journalofantiques.com for those interested. Or the article pops up at the top of the list if you google something like ..."William Dawes autograph colonial money." I almost forgot to explain that the round circle cutout/punch in the money is a proof of cancellation mark used in the late 1700s. Therefore the circular cancellation "punch" is a part of the banknote's history and is NOT damage.
