VOLUME 4 IS SIGNED BY WINSTON CHURCHILL IN BLUE INK W/A TIPPED IN PRESENTATION NOTE ON CHURCHILL’S HYDE PARK GATE LETTERHEAD.*** A SCARE INSCRIBED SET OF ONE OF THE LANDMARK WORKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. Book Description: 6 Volume set on World War II, one of Churchill’s great works. Profusely illustrated with diagrams, maps, and facsimile documents. Many fold out maps, infinite details, and informed commentary from the man who sat at the center of it all. All six are hardcover with dust jackets. Black cloth boards with gilt titling, and dustjackets with multi-colored titling, and decorative gray background. Red top edges on all volumes. Book Condition: ALL VOLUMES NEAR FINE. ALL DUST JACKETS VERY GOOD. All text blocks tight and square. All pages clean and bright and unmarked. All dust jackets in mylar in near fine condition without chips or tears. Red stained top edges on all volumes are faded and other text block edges have faint smudges. All end papers clean, untorn, and laying flat. All maps well folded and present. Overall excellent condition. Individual details below: Vol 1: The Gathering Storm, pub. 1948 - p. 16 has a few faint red ink stains from another paper blotting against it. Vol 2: Their Finest Hour, pub. 1949 – Top edge red is very faded, foxing on text block edge, cream front free end papers have faint foxing. Vol 3: The Grand Vol 4: The Hinge of Fate, pub. 1951 – Front end paper has bookplate pasted on it, ‘Lilian Beatrice Burtinshaw’. Tipped in note to Mrs. L.B. Burtonshaw reads “Dear Madam, Mr. Churchill has been very pleased to inscribe your copy of THE HINGE OF FATE which I return to you herewith. He also thanks you for your kind letter. Yours truly, Jane Portal, Private Secretary” Signed on half-title page in blue ink and dated, “Winston S. Churchill, 1951” Small chips on edges of dust jacket, top back board corner bumped. Volume 5: Closing the Ring, pub. 1952 – nothing to note. Volume 6: Triumph and Tragedy, pub. 1954 – nothing to note.
