The
Golden Age of Illustration
Victorian & Edwardian Illustrations |
|
From
the 1860s to the 1930s, there was a blooming movement
of the illustrator's art in America and England. During
this period notables such as Arthur Rackham and Charles
Dana Gibson, Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker and Fanny
Cory, transformed
the art of children's book illustration.
The movement developed from the advances in printing technology
that permitted accurate and inexpensive art, coupled with
a high demand by the public for new graphic illustrations.

Kate Greenaway
A
children's book illustrator and writer. Her first book, Under
The Window (1879), a collection of simple, perfectly idyllic
verses concerning children who endlessly gathered posies, untouched
by the Industrial Revolution, was a best-seller.
New
techniques of photolithography enabled her delicate watercolors
to be reproduced. Through the 1880s and 90s, in popularity her
only rivals in the field of children's book illustration were
Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, himself also the eponym of
a highly-regarded prize medal. "Kate Greenaway" children,
all little girls and boys too young to be put in trousers, according
to the conventions of the time, were dressed in her own versions
of late eighteenth century and Regency fashions: smock-frocks
and skeleton suits for boys, high-waisted pinafores and dresses
with mobcaps and straw bonnets for girls.
200+
color and b&w illustrations that include; Under the Window,
Mother Goose, The Pied Piper of Hamelin and The Queen
of Pirate Isle, Nursery Rhymes and many misc illustrations
from various books and publications.
