DESCRIPTION:
Each new album from Won James Won that I'm presented with becomes harder and harder to describe, an virtually impossible to assign some sort of genre tag to it. The previous releases from this Moscow-based band have all trafficked in some really wild prog/noise weirdness, but this latest full length from the band is their strangest collection of tracks yet. The Hollow Grail has twenty tracks, and all of this material is culled from live improvised performances that were recorded at various clubs in Moscow and Saint Petersburg between 2002 and 2007. I wouldn't call this a live album though, not in the traditional sense at least, because all of the live material was later heavily manipulated in the studio, and the result is an almost eighty-minute trip through some intensely fucked-up industrial-tinged prog. Some of the songscan almost be described as noise rock, with big chunky riffage, screamed vocals, angular rhythms, but these more elements are often bent or distressed or outright drowned in harsh noise. Samplers are liberally used throughout, smearing weird spoken word segments and vocal loops and strange noises over everything. Skullflowery feedback drones and amorphous amp sludge will suddenly shape itself into a gnarly noise rock jam like "Warning: 19 17 17 19 14 20!". Dark krautrocky ambience and old school analogue synth sounds abound on "Freewheeling Forever". "Dick-Decorating Knife" starts off as a nebulous cloud of psychedelic swirl, then morphs into some demented motorik space rock. Some kind of weird gutteral industrial sludge emerges from "Svengali Collapse". It's all over the fucking place, a dadaist mindfuck of electronically-warped noise rock and deranged Russian space rock, early industrial worship a la Cabaret Voltaire, Mr Bungle-style genrehopping, crushing industrial rock, free jazz, brain-damaged techno, plunderphonic cut-ups, whacked out turntable soundscapes, super silly vocal processing, awesome psychedelic guitars streaking through the druggy, surrealist insanity of Won James Won's world of sound. Far out, and MEGA fucked avant-rock from one of R.A.I.G.'s weirdest bands. Comes in a thick gatefold jacket with raised relief artwork on the front.
