Up for auction is a very scarce Five Volume collection of the Works of Mary Wortley Montagu. The books represent the complete writings of this important author from the 18th century, most famous for her correspondence and her work Life on the Golden Horn. These volumes are a very important contribution to English literature by this stately and talented writer. The volumes include seven fold out facsimiles of her letters as well as two engraved portraits of the author. The books are ruled in decorative gilt around the boards. The spines of the volumes are well worn. There is wear to the bindings including wear at corners, joints and spines. A previous owner’s plate is on the pastedowns. The hinges of the volumes are intact (though weak), although one board of the first volume is partially detached. This is a very important collection of work by this 19th century English writer.
