WORLD COURT REPORTS: 4 BIG BOOKS/LAW/RARE 1934-1943 1ST
JUDGMENTS ORDERS & OPINIONS/ COMPARE at $440 to $500+

WORLD COURT REPORTS: A COLLECTION OF THE JUDGMENTS, ORDERS AND OPINIONS OF THE PERMANENT COURT OF INTERNATIONAL JUSTICE.  VOLUME I: 1922-1926; VOLUME II: 1927-1932; VOLUME III: 1932-1935; VOLUME IV: 1936-1942. EDITED BY MANLEY O. HUDSON.  Washington DC: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 1934, 1935, 1938, 1943.  First Edition. Rare.

A nice First Edition complete set of this important series of books providing the rulings, orders and opinions of the the Permanent Court of International Justice, usually referred to as the World Court. It was established in 1922 as the international court of the League of Nations. Between 1922 and 1940 the Court dealt with 38 contentious cases between  nations [mostly in Europe] and delivered 27 advisory opinions. After World War II, the World Court was replaced by the International Court of Justice when the United Nations was organized. These four large and thick books were edited and compiled by Professor Manley Hudson, a distinguished professor of International Law at harvard Universityl he served as a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague. Published more than 60 years ago, this First Edition books were never reprinted and they are now very scarce and sought-after. There are only two other complete sets of these books listed for sale on the internet, worldwide; a set in New Jersey is priced $444 and the set in England is priced $508. Another complete set of these books is not likely to come up for sale on ebay.

NOTE: There are more pictures at the bottom of this listing. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

From the Preface of Volume One:  "...The editor has assembled in this first volume the texts of the various instruments upon which the Court's existence and maintenance depend; and to these have been added, for ready reference, certain tables of information concerning the Court.  similar materials will be published in later volume,s as the need arises.  this volume also contains the judgments, order and advisory opinions in cases begun before the Court during the period from the inauguration of its work in 1922 to the end of the year 1926.  Orders relating to the conduct of proceedings not published in Series A, B, or A/B have been omitted...

From the Preface of Volume Two:  "...The arrangement in this volume follows closely that in the first volume of World Court Reports, published in November, 1934.  The numerous citations by the Court or the judges in the judgments and opinions reproduced in this volume have been thought to call for a list of cased cited; in this respect only has a departure been made from the original plan.  Attention is drawn to the fact that in new cases references are made in the bibliographies to works which have not been available for consultation by the Editor...

From the Preface of Volume Three:  "...This volume, covering the period from April, 1932, through December, 1935, reports thirteen cases.  three of these cases arose on requests for advisory opinions.  Of the ten contentious cases four were terminated without a judgment on the merits.  The volume therefore contains six judgments and three advisory opinions: it contains also fourteen order, i.e., all of the orders given during this period and published in Series A/B of the Court's publications, and some additional orders not restricted to the fixing of time limits.  The cases are reported in the order in which a first disposition appears in Series A/B...

From the Preface of Volume Four:  "...This fourth volume of the series covers the years 1936 to 1942.  Hence it presents the court's jurisprudence under the amended Stature in force from February 1, 1936, and under the Rules adopted by the Court on march 11, 1936; and it brings the jurisprudence down to the period of hiatus in the Court's activity which began in 1940.  During this period, ten contentious cases came before the Court, and o advisory cases; of the ten cases, only eight were finally disposed of.  the volume contains eight judgments and sixteen order; all f the judgments and orders which were published in Series A/B of the Court's publications during this period are included and in addition some of the more important orders published in Series C.  The introductory part on "Instruments and Information Relating to the Court" presents the text of the amended Stature and the text of the 1936 Rules, as well as information need for a study of the cases and the Court's position in international affairs..."
