An important early Modernist New York cityscape by this artist showing the influence of WPA mural artists as well as the Ashcan School and The Eight. Thickly painted and beautifully textured surface.It's interesting that the buildings and the bird are actually reflections in th streetfront window.

Joseph Leon Lasker was born in Brooklyn N.Y. in 1919. In the 3rd grade, he entered a New York City-wide competition for school children and won two bronze medals. He began studying at night classes at Cooper Union art school at 16, while still in high school, and received two honorable mentions in a mural competition. This led to WPA commissions and to an opportunity to paint murals at two U.S. Post Offices.
 
 In 1941 Lasker was drafted. After discharge in 1945, he twice attended Yaddo, an artists' retreat in Saratoga Springs. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome fellowship and spent two years painting in Italy where he continued to paint and study fresco mural techniques. Returning to New York, he worked as a free lance illustrator, then as a visiting professor at the University of Illinois, Urbana. In recognition of his contribution to America painting, he was elected to the National Academy of Design. The Whitney Museum of American Art conserves his work.
 
NOTE: This work is in excellent condition ( no restorations or in-painting ): frame is also in excellent condition: frame distortion is from my camera lens only: actual frame is even and straight.
