    About this Item

    We are featuring a group of WPA Prints that are quite exceptional. From our own personal MUSEUM quality collection, we are downsizing and able to offer a select group of these historical works of art.

    This auction features a signed color screenprint by Bernard Steffen GNARLED ROOTS. Steffen (1907-1980) was an acclaimed artist whose work is in the Smithsonian Museum, De Young & many others.. Details are:

    • Image size" x 16.5", overall print size is 16"x 20",
    • Signed & titled by Steffen, & WPA stamped, print #24
    • Overall rich color, wide margins, excellent condition. Great image, one of the earliest color prints done in the NY Graphics WPA division under Tony Velonis.

    These are VERY limited edition sizes of up to 25; artists in the WPA program were only allowed to produce up to that number of each print, and many were carelessly destroyed when the program ended as we entered World War II. Due to very small number of existing prints, you are unlikely to find this image again easily.
