YOU ARE BIDDING ON a rare 100% genuine parade hat of Russian Life-Guard 4th Rifle Imperial Family Battalion (Later Regiment).

Description:

A superb example of this regiment's headdress in near mint condition. Black heavy wool square top lined with black fleece fur. Russian Opolchenie cross with a cypher of the Russian Czar Alexander III and motto: "For Faith, Czar, and Motherland," over private man's oval painted tin cockade. Silk liner and leather sweatband, lined with period newspapers for moisture absorbtion. Store stamp from ALEXANDER STORE in ST. PETERSBURG.

Condition:

Superb original condition, shows very little wear . Minor original repair on the sweatband as shown.

A Bit of History:

The L-G Imperial Family Rifles was originally an Opolchenie regiment formed by Nicholas I in 1854 from serfs on the Crown estates around St. Petersburg and their uniform was one of the first examples of the revival of the "Russian Style." It was altered in various ways in subsequent reigns until Nicholas II restored their original dress in 1909. The unit received a St. George banner for its distinction during the Russian-Turkish War of 1877-78. During WW1 the battalion was enlarged to a regiment and sent to a South -Western front where it saw action in the region of Galicia. A favorite of the Imperial family, the unit was frequented by the reigning Emperor Nicholas II and his son, Tsesarevitch Alexey Nikolaevitch, both of them serving as honorary members of the unit.
