HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Interestingly, the image was not called Rosie when she was created. That name came from a popular song written by Red Evans and John Jacob Loeb. By the end of World War II over six million women had become real-life Rosies as welders, riveters, truckers, munition workers, mechanics and every other job needed to feed the war machine. Many of these women workers returned to homemaking after the war, but Rosie The Riveter had a second career. In the 1970s, Rosie The Riveter began an iconic career as the symbol for the emerging battle for women’s rights, particularly in the work force.
