The2FunAdGuyz offer a new high quality reproduction print of a World War I Red Cross poster drawn by one of the most popular artists of era, Harrison Fisher. This would be a great gift for a nurse, especially on National Nurse’s Day. On the poster we see a nurse dressed in white and wrapped in an American Flag. The United States Capitol is in the background. President Woodrow Wilson is quoted: “I summon you to comradeship in the Red Cross.” Harrison Fisher did the work for this and other World War I posters free of charge. This is a classic Harrison Fisher rendering although the expression of concern on the nurse’s face is unique. Harrison’s signature is printed lightly on the lower left center of the illustration. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: During World War I many of the medical services for Allied soldiers were provided by the American Red Cross and the nurses who volunteered for service. The challenge of helping wounded military personnel involved in trench and gas warfare was met by thousands of truly heroic American women. To recruit these nurses many of America’s most talented artists, known for creating portraits of young women, illustrated beautiful posters that both recruited, but also romanticized, these young heroines. Many of these posters recruited nurses to comfort the wounded and perform their other services for civilians caught in the war zones. This poster is a prime example of this genre. HEADLINE: I summon you to comradeship in the Red Cross. ARTIST: Harrison Fisher (1875 – 1934), created many of the beautiful young women who graced the covers and insides of America’s magazines during the early part of the twentieth century. He and his compatriots gave the world “The American Girl”, at a time when the word girl had no negative context. Many were wealthy and were usually shown in leisure activities. With his pen and brush he created an enduring image of beauty for beauties’ sake—no apologies needed or accepted. For Fisher, Cosmopolitan covers became a long time venue for his art. These portraits of women were his lifetime work and today still intrigue us. For good reason he was called “The Father of a Thousand Girls.” Fisher put it more simply: “I like to draw.” We are glad he did. ORIGINAL MEDIA: American Lithographic Co. did the original lithograph on which this new print is based. DECORATING USES: Many of our customers find this poster useful for home and office decorating. Decorators have used it in decorating home libraries and dens. Office decorators use it in medical offices, hospitals and medical supply houses. GIFT IDEAS: Beautiful poster ideal for Nurse Graduation Days, National Nurses Day or to give to a collector of medical or American Red Cross Memorabilia. ![]() PAPER QUALITY: This new print is on a highest quality, acid-free, 100-pound glossy premium text paper that allows for maximum color brilliance and fidelity for older images.
