Distillation is the most effective method of water purification. Distillation occurs when water is brought to 212 degrees, boiled, thus killing bacteria and viruses, then vaporized to separate out minerals, lead, bacteria, nitrates and other contaminants. How the WaterWise Distiller Works:

1. Tap water is heated to 212 degrees F in the boiling chamber, killing bacteria, virus, cysts and protozoan that may be present.
2. Steam rises into the cooling coil, while volatile gasses (VOCs), vent off through a special vent in condensing coil.
3. Steam rises into the cooling coil, Fan forced air, cools the cooling coil, causing the water vapor to condense back to a liquid.
4. The dissolved solids, salts and other contaminants are left behind in the stainless still pot, easily cleaned before next use.
5. Purified water percolates out through the cooling coil then through a carbon polishing filter into the 1 gallon storage container. The WaterWise distiller produces one liter on of pure, refreshing water per hour. Six gallons per day.

May 19, 1998: Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has completed the testing and certification and WaterWise is now classified under UL's NEW Drinking Water Treatment Unit (DWTU) Certification program. UL Classified WaterWise System's Countertop Distillation Unit to ANSI/NSF 62. Unit was evaluated at UL's facility where UL conducts extraction and analytical testing, specific contaminant reduction verification testing, and pressure testing.

UL verified 11 performance claims for WaterWise countertop drinking water distiller unit using ANSI/NSF 62, Drinking Water Distillation Systems. The claims included the reduction of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, fluoride, lead, mercury, nitrate, selenium and microbiologicals.  Intended for residential use, the product treats up to one gallon of water at a time. WaterWise Systems' distillers are also certified for electrical safety.

UL's new program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and accepted by all the regulatory jurisdictions that require special recognition: California, Iowa, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and the city of Los Angeles.

Special note: Health risks involved with VOC's

VOCs may damage the nervous, reproductive, and immune systems. Some VOC's are "endocrine impostors" that mimic hormones "triggering biological reactions that wreak havoc in the brain and in the immune and reproductive systems" (Water Systems News & Home Water Report). What is especially alarming is that, in many cases, it is not just one VOC at a time that is in tap water. According to the Environmental Working group, consumers are routinely exposed to multiple VOC's in one glass of tap water. Infants and children are especially at risk because "they drink more water per pound of body weight than adults, and they're still growing, which makes them particularly vulnerable to health risks posed by exposure to these toxic substances," according to David Rall, Ph.D., director of PSR's (Physicians for Social Responsibility) Science and Environmental Health Policy Project.

How long do the carbon filters last? It depends on your usage. Under normal conditions, the filter will last 2-3 months. Your results may vary... Generally you will know when it is time to change the filter when there is a taste change in the water.
