When hardcore Royal Trux fans start waxing poetic about the virtues of the band's almost unlistenably arty TWIN INFINITIVES, the only proper response is to hand them THANK YOU, the Trux's first tribute to arena-rock and one of their best records. Given her wizards and skulls aesthetic, Jennifer Herrema is clearly no art snob, and on her second RTX full-length she distills the Trux's sleazy take on big hair and cheap buzzes, while considerably upping the voltage.
In 2007, the jury was still out on Herrema's ability to survive creatively without Neil Hagerty--her longtime partner in crime--but WESTERN XTERMINATOR seethes with Herrema's carnal rasp, begging indie chauvinists to wonder who the driving energy in Royal Trux really was. If ACCELERATOR-era Trux copped ZZ Top, WESTERN XTERMINATOR goes to early Motley Crue for its shredded-denim inspiration, and in the process rocks harder than any Royal Trux record ever did.
