| | Album notes | Scritti Politti: Green Gartside. For his first album since 1999's hip-hop-inspired ANOMIE & BONHOMIE, Green Gartside (aka Scritti Politti) returns to his original home on the seminal Rough Trade label for 2006's WHITE BREAD BLACK BEER. The album is much closer in style to the mellifluous pop of the 1981 single "The Sweetest Girl" than the agit-prop funk-punk of the band's early incarnations or the Michael Jackson worship of CUPID & PSYCHE '85. Gartside's lilting near-falsetto croon--particularly on the lightly shuffling Beach Boys-esque "Snow In the Sun"--is at the center of this refined pop confection; however, Scritti Politti is never far from the dancefloor, and WHITE BREAD BLACK BEER is steeped in sporty grooves and electronica flourishes--from burbling synths to buoyant electro-rock to wry references to rap and contemporary R&B. One of the most enigmatic pop records released in 2006, Gartside has made an album that is as curious it as delightful.
