How To Take Measurements

To custom make a garment that perfectly fits the child, there are 10 important measurements that we require. For each, the child should be standing straight and be relaxed, be barefooted and be wearing only underwear. The measuring tape should be kept snug, but not tight.

  • Chest: Use a measuring tape around the fullest part the chest and shoulder blades, with the measuring tape under the arms.
  • Waist: The child should relax when taking this measurement to ensure comfort. Keep the tape snug but not tight. Measure around the narrowest part of the waist, generally around the belly button area.
  • Hips: It's important to measure across the widest part of the child's bottom, even if it's actually around the thighs. The hip measurement is the widest measurement below the waist.
  • Skirt Length: Measure from the waist to the desired hem length.
  • Waist To Floor: Measure from the waist to the floor.
  • Neck To Waist: Lowering the child's head forward, locate the prominent bone at the base of neck. Return to standing in normal posture, and measure from this bone to the waistline.
  • Shoulder Length: Measure from the base of the neck where it joins the body to the bone at the edge of the shoulder.
  • Upper Arm Circumference: Around the thickest part of the upper arm when the arm is bent.
  • Sleeve Length: With the elbow bent at about a 45 degree angle (hand on hip), measure from the bone at the edge of the shoulder to the wrist bone. The measurement should be along the outside of the arm.
  • Wrist Circumference: Around the bony part of the wrist.

We will also need to know the child's height. While not a critical measurement (the 10 shown above are the important ones), it allows us to get a final understanding of the "shape" of the child, and to put the other measurements into perspective.
