| I'm launching a series of digital "reprints" on CD of various old musical instruments trade catalogs and other antique music related books and prints and new items similar to this are added to my eBay store all the time. And don't hesitate to ask me if you can't find what you're looking for. There are hundreds of other titles in peparation. Please note that the item in this and my other ebook auctions are reproductions, not originals. |
This is a CD with a facsimile of a catalog from a company even most experts have never heard of.The National Band Instrument Company was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by former Hoyer employee William Frank. It only lasted for a few short years before changing name to William Frank and Company. Finding a catalog published under the original company name is rare indeed and this is doulbe rare since it's from the transitional period and has both the old and the new name in it.
Previews
Here are a few scaled down samples from the ebook. (You can click on the images to view slightly larger versions.)
Please note that the large images above are still much smaller than the ones on the CD.
You can click here for a full size scan of one of the pages if you want to see the quality available from the CD. I have have to warn you though: that file is really big and can be slow to load. (That's one of the reasons why I sell this ebook on CD rather than as a download.)

Physical description of the originalThe size is 19.7 cm height and 27.9 cm width. The pages are 18.5x27.4 cm. The eight numbered pages are printed black-and-white on high quality glossy paper. The oversize cover is made from heavy, greenish-brown porous paper and printed in dark reddish-brown. A sticker with the name and address of William Frank and Company has been added to the inside of the front cover and there is evidence that similar stickers once covered the other occurences of the original company name as well. Presumably the copany changed name while this catalog was still in circulation. The catalog is center-bound with two staples.
DatingA selection of lip excercises by Edward Llewllyn has a 1915 copyright date and a special mouthpiece design called the "Logical Mouthpiece" has a patent date of June 28, 1915.
ContentThe catalog presents National/William Frank's range of two cornets, one trumpet, one trombone and one bugle - each with a full page with a picture and a rather detailed description. The bugle is the old keyless one. William Frank is often credited as the inventor of the American keyed bugle but this catalog dates back to well before that happened. In addition there is one page promoting the "Logical Mouthipece" (an assymetric mouthpiece patented in 1913 and one promoting a collection of lip drills by Edward Llewellyn.
FormatThe CD presents the catalog in a choice of three different formats: high resolution (360 dpi) JPEG scans for maximum quality, HTML format allowing you to leaf through the scans as if it was a paper book and PDF format for quick reference with all pages in a single document. It is readable on any reasonably modern computer with a CD drive.
