A regular, box-shaped window fan works great AND it can help spread the bubbles over a larger area than most other bubble machines. Strong fans can create a HUGE output of bubbles. Lower fan settings are generally preferred with stronger fans, or when using indoors. Many other wind sources will also work just fine, such as hair dryers, vaccuums, leaf blowers, etc. but they might be too loud for extended use. Small or weak fans are not recommended & usually have a reduced output. Outdoor operation without a fan is possible but it's generally intermittent at best. If there is a strong enough wind due to weather &/or location (windy day at the beach, roof-top gardens, etc.) then you might get a decent bubble output without a fan. But for maximum bubble output, results are usually best when using with an average-sized house fan.

An efficient design combined with a large fluid reservoir (which holds over 32 ounces of solution) allows you to produce bubbles for a long time between fill ups. Although it's easy to refill, even while in operation. Just pour in more bubble solution whenever it runs low. The exact duration between refills will vary with the output. Setting up for a minimal output would make a trickle bubbles that can last up to several hours before needing more fluid. On the other hand, using a strong fan set for maximum output would create a massive output of bubbles, but more solution would be needed a lot sooner. The ideal level is often somewhere in the middle and varies with the location, personal preference, etc. Experiment to see what suits the occasion best.

Homemade bubble solution can be easily & affordably made with just dish soap with water. Start with a ratio around 1:5 then experiment for best results. Cheaper brands of soap tend to start out a little thinner but most brands can be diluted even more than 1:5 and still make lots of bubbles. Try adding a few drops of perfume or essential oils for scented bubbles - or Citronella to help deter mosquitoes.
