Synopsis
A biography of William Haines, a popular film star of the 1930s who was Hollywood's first openly homosexual star. His flamboyance and open disregard of the moral conventions of the day brought him a great deal of adverse publicity, and after being implicated in several widely noted scandals, he was permanently blacklisted by the studios and became an interior decorator to support himself.

Publisher's Note
In 1930 William Haines was Hollywood's number-one box-office draw - a talented, handsome, wisecracking romantic lead. After leaving acting he went on to become the interior designer to Hollywood's elite - everyone from Carole Lombard and Jack Warner to Nancy Reagan - and to such clients as Ambassador Walter Annenberg, who commissioned him for the American Embassy in London. Through it all, he never disguised who he was: Off-screen, he was openly gay to reporters and studio chiefs alike, and at his side at all times was his lover, Jimmie Shields. In a world where truth is often distorted in the funhouse mirror of Hollywood, Billy Haines lived a completely authentic life. Here is William Haines's virtually unknown story - rich in detail, revelations, and scandal. As the political climate in Hollywood changed, Billy refused to go along. He bucked studio pressure to stop carousing and get married, leading to skirmishes with Louis B. Mayer and the police; there was even a violent encounter with gay-bashing white supremacists in 1936. Here, for the first time, the stories of Hollywood's gay stars are seen in context with their times and with one another, revealing a pattern of intimidation by the studios and, ultimately, the establishment of the Hollywood closet. Alone among his contemporaries - Ramon Novarro, Cary Grant, Tyrone Power - Haines refused to play the game, and so was booted out. In the end, however, he triumphed: In his new profession of interior design Billy gained Hollywood's abiding respect, and his union with Jimmie Shields lasted nearly fifty years.
In 1930 William Haines was Hollywoods #1 box-office draw - a talented, handsome, wisecracking romantic lead. Offscreen, protected by a careful collaboration between studio and press, he was openly gay with reporters and studio chiefs alike. Here is Haines's virtually unknown story - rich with detail, revelations, and scandal - about silent movies and talkies; his lover Jimmie Shields, and the fifty-year relationship (Joan Crawford, their best friend, called them "The happiest married couple in Hollywood") and the enforcement of the Production Code and the establishment of the Hollywood closet, which led to the blacklisting that ultimately doomed Haimes's film career. Wisecracker sweeps from gay pool parties to the excitement of early talkies to Haines's infamous encounter with gay-bashing white supremicists in 1936. He survived the scandal to emerge as a top interior decorator to the stars and to such clients as Nancy Reagan and Walter Annenberg, who employed him for the American Embassy in London. With a cast of characters running from Tallulah Bankhead to Betsy Bloomingdale, from Clark Gable to William Randolph Hearst, Wisecracker is an astounding peice of newly discovered gay history, a chronicle of high Hollywood, and - at it's heart - a great and enduring love story.

Industry reviews
"What [Mann's] book lacks in style, it makes up for in strategy: He has ably evoked an era of sexual laissez-faire through the life of William Haines."
Washington Post Book World - Dennis Drabelle (01/18/1998)

"Mann...has done good research and has written a lively book that fans of Hollywood gossip will love."
New York Times Book Review - Whitaker (02/08/1998)

"Haines's lifelong refusal to hide his homosexuality is the theme here...Insightful, packed with entertaining gossip, and an illuminating reminder that knee-jerk homophobia has not always been the American way."
Halverson

William Haines was one of MGM's biggest stars in the late 1920s, playing cocky but sympathetic wise guys in movies such as Brown of Harvard. He was as self-assured in real life: dropped by the studio in 1933 because he refused to hide his homosexuality, Haines became a successful interior decorator. Journalist William J. Mann perceptively links Haines's story to shifting attitudes in the movie industry, the gay community, and America as a whole. He also paints a tender portrait of the actor's love for Jimmie Shields, his companion from 1926 until Haines's death in 1973.
