I will make this listing as plain English and to the point as I can, just like the plans I am offering. I built my first small kiln in the spring of 2005 using a home dehumidifier and a few hardware store parts for about $200. I was told it would not work, I will ruin my wood--blow up the d/h unit. Of course this was coming from the guy wanting to sell me a $4000 dehumidification kiln package and the guy who was charging me $.33 bft to dry my fresh sawn lumber at the time. Then there was the solar kiln advocates, where I live in central Illinois a solar kiln is simply a part time deal. I could just write off the winter months, solar was not going to work. I dry wood year around now in my shop made dehumidification kiln. To answer the skeptics I am still running the same kiln and estimate I have dried over 10,000 bft to use for myself and sell as kiln dried. I put some pictures in this listing of the types of wood I regularly throw in my kiln and there are more on my sawmill website. That single 24" wide figured maple slab is worth more than I have invested in my kiln...I put 15 exactly like it in one load without hesitation. They all came out perfectly flat with no degrade. I just could not have trusted anyone else with 200 bft of lumber I later sold for $15 bft ($3000). To go further it cost me about $.05 bft to run my kiln in electricity, so that was a whopping $10. I would have had more than that in fuel just getting to the nearest kiln drier, not to mention the labor/wasted time and extra handling. I just dried the wood right in my shop like I do all my lumber. I have sold 400+ of these plans since 2006, some here (check my positive feedback) most from my website and some on a woodworking forum I moderate. The most frequently asked question is "How big is it ?". You are building the chamber so the answer is however large you need/how much space you can afford. This kiln can be used outside, in a basement, in your shop...mine is in an unheated pole barn where my sawmill is. My kiln is 9' x 4' x 4', but some who use my plan make theirs 12'-14' feet long. Most people who buy the plans want to make changes and go larger or smaller, no problem I can make recommendations to help you get the best performance from your kiln. Basically if you can build a dog house you can build this kiln. Most kilns built off this plan dry 300 bft at a time and that is what I feel most comfortable with giving advice on. Average dry time for partially air dried wood is 14 days, as little as 7 days for wood under 20% taken down to 7%. I think it is the perfect size for a small shop. You can build this kiln for less than $300 in material and it costs on average $.05 bft to dry your lumber. Since I sell/use air dried wood as well as kiln dried I am only running about 500 bft through mine a month, that costs me $25 a month for drying. Pretty cheap for 500 bft of kiln dried wood that I did not have to haul anywhere to get it dried. I know woodworkers who dry others wood in their kiln they built off my plans in exchange for some of the lumber (hey free wood) or charge for the service. I personally charge $.35 bft to kiln dry so my first 2 custom loads paid for my materials and a little profit, the rest since 2005 has been all profit. For $25 you get the plans (10 pages with text and pictures) and my experience as a sawmill owner and kiln operator. I am available to answer any questions you have during the building or operation of your kiln at no extra charge. If you are looking for a no nonsense, easy to build and operate, inexpensive and safe way to dry your own lumber that is what I am offering here. I am not your typical faceless eBay lister. I put a link to my website below my name (cool wood pictures for you woodworkers) so you can find out all you need to know about me and buy with confidence. Daren Nelson http://nelsonwoodworks.biz/ |
