Great Woodworker's References
8 US Forestry Service Books
eBooks on CDROM

I have collected and compiled 8 different woodworking related books and put them on one CD. These books are all in Adobe Acrobat formatted and can be printed in part or complete. I am including the free Acrobat reader on the CD to save you the effort of the download. I first learned of the existence of these books by reading Fine Woodworking magazine and set out to find them. I found the set and decided to save you the effort and make these available to fellow woodworkers. A total of 1326 great pages of wood information with lots of diagrams, pictures for clarification and education, and charts covering everything from specific gravity of different kinds of woods to strength of different types of grains in different configurations.

If you are interested in the finer points of North American woods, these are for you. If you want to be a lumberjack and harvest and mill your own lumber, the information for drying (both air and kiln) is here. If you want to learn to "read" the grain on wood, these are for you!

If you are a tax payer in the United States, then you have already paid for these books because the US Forrestry Service used your tax dollars to do the research and write the books. I am only charging for my time and effort to bring these books to you. For $8, you get the books shipped to your front door by US Postal Service. If you want extra's for your friends or your clubs, go to my eBay store and take as many as you like and shipping will be free for any additional CD's.  If you want priority mail delivery, please include $2.

You can also get a copy of the Wood Handbook included in this set from Lee Valey/Veritas. It is advertised for $22.95 on page 35 of the 2003/2004 tool catalog. This is probably the best of the set of books here. The Forrest Products Laboratory of USDA has been publishing this book since the 1930's and updates it regularly. The latest update, included on the CD, is from 1999.
These books include:
Dry Kiln Operator's Manual
The Wood Handbook -- Wood as an engineering material
Air Drying of Lumber
A Simplified Procedure for Developing Grade Lumber from Hardwood Logs
Drying hardwood lumber
Hardwoods of North America
Softwoods of North America
Storage of Lumber

Here is a list of chapters for a couple of the books:
