THE WORKS OF PUBLIUS VIRGILIUS MARO, translated, adorned with sculpture and illustrated with annotations by John Ogilby Esq, Master of his Majesties Revells in the Kingdom of Ireland. Published by Thomas Roycroft, London 1668. Second Edition. Large folio. More than 500 pages. Contains the following Works: the Bucolicks (Eclogues), the Georgicks and the Aeneis (Aeneid), preceded by A Life of Virgil authored by John Ogilby.
Illustrators: Wenceslaus Hollar, William Faithorne, Pierre Lombart (among others?).
The book is leatherbound, with marbelized endpapers (see pictures). The binding is fine in the sense that the signatures are held firmly together. The (original) spine is for about 65% present, but the boards  are no longer attached because the upper layer of the leather spine is missing. The front and back boards have gilded decorations. The inner book is in great shape: the pages, including the ones with the beautiful gravures, are clean and there is no foxing. A few pages had small tears, which have been professionally repaired, without interference with the text or with the illustrations. The frontispiece of the translator John Ogilby is glued in and could be a facsimile. The text is continuous, even if the pagination is sometimes wrong. Although there are no obvious indications that  the book is incomplete, we have seen descriptions of the second edition with a larger number of full page engravings and including a double page map, which is not present in our copy. There are in total 122 engravings, of which 65 full page copper gravures, 45 in the Book of Aeneas and 20 in the preceding books.
It has to be emphasized: the copper engravings are of very high quality and in excellent condition (see the pictures).
John Dryden and Alexander Pope were in later years  critical of Ogilby's translation.
