| Old World War 2 WWII Oil on Canvas Normandy Air Battle
- Look at this exceptional piece. It is an oil on canvas painting, of course, depicting a WWII Scene. This is the Fight over Normandy
- It shows the opposite side of the story - as you can see, the German airplanes are winning, while the Allied Powers' forces are struggling
- This piece was painted by a WWII German pilot who fought in this exact battle, almost immediately after returning home, injured in battle. He signed his name on the lower left as pictured, but unfortunately not well enough that we can read it. We do not know if this was the officer's real name or his pseudonym
- Here is its story :: We bought it from the estate of a Bulgarian Air Force officer, and this painting, and his Military orders, were the only things that he wanted to be brought from Germany back to Bulgaria after he died. He lived long years after the war in the Western Germany, but he was a patriot and wanted to be buried in his homeland after his death in the 1970-80s. The painting was given to him by the German pilot who painted it, right before his death. They were good friends
- FYI - Bulgaria was an Axis power during WWII, and it was not uncommon for there to be good friendships between Bulgarians and Germans during and after the war, especially between officers, even though Bulgaria later was occupied by the Red Army and subsequently became a part of the Soviet Block
- The planes are depicted with enough accuracy, and obviously the artist had a good sense of proportions and perspective. Done on a hand made stretcher with no professional canvas, but with some canvas-like material, probably a piece of a sack or larger bag. Keep in mind that times were tough back then, and it was hard to find appropriate art materials
- One may call this Trench art or Soldier art. No matter - it's just a wonderful and authentic WWII piece of history
- Measurements: Approx. 33" x 25.5". This painting comes unframed, as found
- Condition: Very Good +/Excellent overall, no major issues at all. A slight blemish that resulted from the stretcher on the back of the canvas, and because the paint was very thick. Keep in mind that times were tough back then, and it was hard to find appropriate art materials
