XTC has obviously never been short on high quality material. With a stunning catalogue of superb albums featuring deceptively complex playing and hilarious and/or poignant lyrics, their ability to play by their own rules and reap the rewards for it is well known. What is far less known, however, is their more experimental side. Presided over mostly by Andy, this side of the group has led to some of its least heard and appreciated music. This is a shame, really, for as is inevitable with a band as talented as XTC, there are some stunning drafts in this largely unheard sketchbook. And for anyone daring enough to have a go at it, Explode Together: The Dub Experiments 78-80 is tailor made for just that purpose. A truly fascinating disc that too few people have taken the time to get to know.
This copy of that disc is from
my own collection, and, as it was only played once, everything about it is in pristine shape: its CD and insert are perfect, and even
its case is shows noticeably less than average shelf wear.
In
short, this is a classic example of what some have called 'an insights disc.' Full of experiments, rough drafts, and fluid ideas, it is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of both XTC and especially the inimitable Mr. Partridge.
