DETAILS::: This natural, hand made, real CEREMONIAL HEALING DRUM is a strong, thick gourd (gourd is another of natures marvelous wood products) with beautiful thick buffalo rawhide stretched across, & laced down with incredibly strong buffalo rawhide thong. Size is 12 inches across face of drum-head, & 13 inches deep (tall), from head to base (This shape creates a deep resonating chamber, excellent quality, deep rich loud sound). Side to side measurement is 15 inches across at widest point as the gourd naturally rounds out & then tapers back in, Chalice in shape. ABOUT GOURDS:The gourd is an excellent resonator, used for millenia as musical instruments, much better quality of sound than heavy wood frames of same size. Gourds provide quality rich clear sound from a smaller head (smaller than 22 or 24 inch), & several 'voices' from one drum. Gourds & rawhide are natures creations & canvas, & slight "imperfections": not perfectly round, pretty swirl patterns, dots, or growth marks might be present. These are completely natural features enhancing the rustic beauty, just like a woods grain, & does not effect quality. Dyes & sealers have been used to protect & enhance, will last a lifetime or more, they have found pieces of gourds in archeological sites dating over 4 thousand years old! About Hand Crafted Natural Drums & Their Care::: Natural drums are hand made instruments of rich, beautiful & varied tones. The natural raw hide head whether it is Elk, Deer or Buffalo (goat is too thin), lends itself well to many beautiful voices from one instrument. Natural variations in the thickness when stretched properly over the resonant gourd body or other wood body, brings these beautiful variations. I've seen natural gourd drums in concert, where the drummers warm & tighten the heads over light bulbs before playing. Natural heads can be effected by environmental factors, such as cold or moisture, warming them in this case tightens the head back up bringing the true voice out.
