Drinking Straw

This bombilla, or drinking straw, made of natural reed is used to enjoy yerba mate in a cup or gourd, is slightly “curved” at the top for a more ergonomic use and measures approx. 6 1/2 inches. This type is made one by one, differently than the metal ones which are manufactured in series.

The bombilla made of reed is an alternative for those who prefer a more ecological approach to drinking mate.

The Bombilla

 

“In its simples form the bombilla is a reed or thin joint of bamboo, over the lower end of which a few horsehairs have been woven, or a small bit of loose cloth has been tied.

In its more advanced and mechanically perfect form, it’s a tube closed at the lower end except for a number of small perforations.

Its latest development is the product of the art of the silversmith, and consists of a tube, which has a little lid, which is perforated by numerous small openings.” This is the accurate report of an American traveler, W.J. Holland, in his book To the River Plate and Back, 1913.
