A soft mercerized cotton shawl, which combines the principal yellow and persimmon background colors with delicate curved and geometric black, chiffon yellow and rust ikat patterns.
These cotton ikat shawls from Orissa are a new addition to our collection. They are characterized by very fine and detailed curved patterns, which distinguish them from the ikats of Andhra and Gujarat. Though the Ikat weaving centers in Orissa are not as large as the ones in Andhra and Gujarat, the quality of their products and the attention to detail is unparalled.
This shawl measures 92 by 36 inches (233 cm by 91 cm).
The cotton fibers, or bundles of fibers, that make up these
ikat shawls are individually colored with the tie-and-dye technique, they are
then arranged in order in which they will be woven and hand loomed to form
these beautiful pieces. This process which is very time consuming produces
reversible fabrics superior in quality and feel to mass produced, printed material.
Hand dyed and hand-loomed by artisans in Orissa, India.
All of our products are hand-made, and as in most human endeavors imperfections
occur. They are an integral part of the gesture and the signature of the
artisan.
