ITEM DESCRIPTION: These are old Powder Glass (sometimes called "Sand Cast") Trade beads from Africa. This style of bead has been made since the 1600s. These beads are typical of those made from the 1800s to mid-1900s. Beads were made by taking scrap glass (jars, bottles, etc.) and grinding the glass into powder. Glass powder was layered into clay molds with a plant stem inserted into the center of each. Patterns made like sand art in a bottle. During firing, the glass fused and the stem burned off leaving a hole for stringing. Used for indigenous trade, but many were also aquired by European Traders and brought to the Americas for the Fur Trade. These beads are old and many will have accumulated dirt and stains in the recesses - I leave it to you whether to clean them or leave the old on them. This lot is for 1 strand of avg. 1/2 inch long beads. Please check my other items. FEEDBACK ON OUR VINTAGE, AFRICAN, POWDER GLASS BEADS:
