This wonderful mate was handmade without the utilization of complex tools by an Argentine artisan.

In our travels through South America we have met and come to know the artisan whose work is being showcased in this auction. We support the artisans and their efforts to provide a better quality of life for their families.

THIS IS THE NATIONAL DRINK OF ARGENTINA

This mate is made of Palo Santo or Holy wood. It is the heart wood of the species of the genus Guaiacum, also known as Iron wood. It is polished on the outside, it has no enamel or varnish. It is very solid. It is used to drink a tea-like beverage called yerba mate.
This handmade mate vessel is approximately 3.50" tall, the cavity is 1 3/4" in diameter and 2 1/8" deep and holds 3 to 4 ounces of liquid.  It is compact and holds enough yerba mate for one person to drink comfortably.
It is brown in color with dark accents.

This unique bombilla is nickel plated with gold accents. It measures 7.25 inches long. It is very easy to clean, just remove the threaded bulb and rinse with warm and mild detergent.

This is Rosamonte's best blend of its popular yerba mate. Manufactured in Argentina. Rosamontes best is aged for 18 months. Their proprietary processes use hard woods for their drying ovens so the taste is not altered and their temperature controlled aging warehouses create a unique tasting yerba mate.

Attention to detail and strict quality control in all of the processes guarantee a consistent flavor. The packaging on this yerba mate has a special double layer that preserves the taste.

I don't know how long it will be available. I have been using it for over 6 months.


Yerba Mate is an herb that is a traditional tea infusion used by the natives of South America. This tea-like beverage is consumed mainly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil. It is brewed from the dried leaves and stems of the Yerba Mate tree
(Ilex paraguarensis).

The infusion is prepared from the leaves of the Mate tree, a native of the tropical rain forests of northeastern Argentina, eastern Paraguay and southern Brazil. The Yerba is placed into the mate or gourd and hot water is added to create the infusion. The infusion is consumed through a traditional bombilla or straw that strains the herb. This stimulating herbal drink is low in caffeine and carbohydrates and contains generous amounts of amino acids and antioxidants.

Yerba Mate reduces stress, boosts immunity, helps control appetite and stimulates the mind. Among many of the benefits enjoyed by drinking this infusion are improved digestion, cleansing of your blood and it slows aging. This social drink enjoys tremendous popularity in Argentina where the ritual of sharing a mate with friends is a part of the fabric that holds that society together.

HOW TO CURE A MATE GOURD

  1. Fill your new mate gourd 3/4 of the way full with fresh Yerba Mate.
  2. Fill the mate gourd with hot (Not Boiling) water.
  3. Let the hot water absorb for 30 minutes.
  4. After 30 minutes, the water level will have gone down due to absorption. Add hot water to fill the mate gourd again.
  5. Let the gourd sit for 24 Hours.
  6. After 24 Hrs. remove the Yerba Mate and gently scrape the inside of the mate gourd with a small spoon to remove loose debris. (Be careful not to damage the thick membrane of the gourd)
  7. Wash the inside of the mate gourd with hot water (do not use soap!).
  8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 one more time and you are ready to use your mate.
