In 1997, the Yerkes Observatory will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Osterbrock (Pauper and Prince: Ritchey, Hale & Big American Telescopes, Univ. of Arizona, 1993) is eminently qualified to write this centennial work, having earned his doctorate in astronomy there, as well as four other degrees from its parent body, the University of Chicago. When Yerkes became operational in 1897, it was the second-largest scientific establishment in America. This book chronicles the development of this research center and emphasizes the role of the first three directors. The reader encounters not only the machinations of a top-flight research institution but comes to a better understanding of the development of such institutions within a historical and geographical context. This is not a dry, impersonal history but a fascinating personal account of men and their ambitions.
