A mudfish on each side of the mask indicates that the mask represents a fisherman. This mask ( next to 6 other Gelede masks from the same collection ) has been part of the African Art Exhibition:" Myth, Mask and Magic" at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale in 2002
Gelede masks are danced by men in a masquerade that pays tribute to the " Power of the Mothers", and refers to the dual power of women as givers of life, and their dangerous abilities at witchcraft.
