A MARIMBA CAN EASILY BE BUILT BY ANYONE EVEN MODERATELY SKILLED IN THE USE OF THE COMMON WOODWORKING TOOLS.
COST IS GREATLY REDUCED when you build your own. The instrument shown was built for less than $50, and even that figure can be materially reduced.
A MARIMBA consists essentially of a series of wooden keys turned to proper pitch and suitably frame-suspended over the open ends of resonators. The latter consist of thin-walled tubing, closed at the lower end.
THE QUALITY OF THE INSTRUMENT, and to a great degree the cost, depend on the choice of wood used for the keys, and the material used for the resonators.
WHILE DIFFERENT WOODS may be used for the keys, it is best to use Brazilian rosewood. Ordinary cardboard mailing tubes may be used for the resonators, but in commercial instruments brass or aluminum tubing is normally employed. The latter is recommended.
