ZEELICIOUS! What a neat Z Scale hopper from PennZee! The Rock Island Line! The shops usually want to sell these hoppers in sets of four, as there are four different reporting numbers per Road, but if you would like to just add-on or fill-in, and only need one, here is your chance to do so. This hopper wears number 701127. Those of you familiar with PennZee's rolling stock are aware of the detail and quality built into them. This hopper carries a load of coal, and there is a built-in weight in the bottom centerbar! The printing is clean and crisp as usual, and Magne-Matic knuckle couplers give this model a touch of American Railroad realism! It will arrive packed in a clear plastic box with a transparent form-fitted interior.
These Rock Island hopper cars are sure to be a smash! They are appropriate for all diesel model locomotives from the Central part of the USA, and would make for a really colorful consist! The RI boasted track in Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana...from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and out to the Pacific Coast!
The Rock Island Railroad began in 1845, in Rock Island, Illinois, and soon became the first railroad to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. The RI was a very successful passenger and freight company. However, by the 1930's, general economic depression and repeated crop failures had combined to weaken the system financially. The hardships of the "Dust Bowl" era depleted the RI's health. On December 31, 1936 the Rock Island had 1,160 steam locomotives. By the end of 1947 this number was reduced to half. In 1948 under the name of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Company, new freight and passenger equipment was acquired and a heavy repair and building program in company shops was launched. By 1970 Heavier diesels with jumbo hoppers, 89-foot boxcars and triple decker auto loaders became common on every train. But despite the best efforts of management and trustee, and the flashy new blue and white "Rock" image, the company could not survive. In early 1980, the railroad fell to bankruptcy, and on March 31st of that year, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad operated its last train.
