| | Album notes | The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Napoleon Murphy Brock (vocals, saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet); Bruce Fowler (trombone); George Duke, Don Preston (keyboards, synthesizers); Tom Fowler, Jeff Simmons (bass); Ralph Humphrey, Chester Thompson (drums). Recorded live at Notre Dame University, Chicago, Illinois on May 12, 1974. This is part of Rhino's series of "legit" releases of various Zappa live shows previously available on bootleg albums. Recorded live at Notre Dame University May 12, 1974, this well-recorded set captures the artist at a transitional period in his career. Zappa and band (this line-up never recorded in a studio) were still doing songs from their '60s catalog, as well as '70s material. Further, the whole is characterized by a zany, jazz-tinged, free-wheeling insanity. It's all here: odd time signatures, jerky transitions, mocking yet soulful vocals, barbed yet subtle satirical lyrics and brain-sizzling solos. While the sound quality is not up to contemporary standards, the music is what matters, and here the better qualities of '60s and '70s Zappa are present in abundance.
