!! "Early" Bird Special !!
Every now and then, I will find something in our old stock that suprises me. I was shocked when I turned over these nice, old watch tips and saw the hallmark! I could not believe my eyes when I looked at it and had to run for the magnifying glass. If you don't know who Horace Iule is just type his name into your favorite search engine and see how many pages come up! I will give you a small hint ... "his anvil was a short piece of railroad track attached to a tree stump." American Indian Jewelry 1,200 Artists Biographies by Gregory Schaaf pg. 187. Ok, so why the "early bird special" Ms. Bear? I can only encourage you to bid early as these are a must have for any collector's kit and I doubt as if anyone would argue just how special they are. So, on these watch tips, the early bird will catch them!
Horace Iule was a master Zuni silversmith and artisan. These watch tips were done in sandcasting, one of the many mediums he learned to master in his lifetime. I guess carving is just an enate trait and in the blood of the Zuni people. Horace carved his castings from stone and then perfected them with his anvil and hand files. He and his wife, Lupe, worked mostly in sandcasting but both were proficient in channel and mosaic work as well. These tips were created by Horace, he carved the sandcasting mold for them, poured the silver, broke the mold then hammered them, shaped them, stamped them, applied the stones to them, all so we could be a witness to them.
These watch tips measure approximately 1 1/2" by 1 1/8" and they weigh 43.2 grams of sterling and stone.
Horace Iule was a master and a great artist. (1900 - 1970) These belong in a collection where they will be appreciated.
NOTE: One stone has a crack but it poses no problem at all as it has been that way for years.
