 The city of Mashhad is the capital of Khorasan and one of the two holly cities of Iran. Every year, a great number of Muslem piligrims come here to pray in the holy place, the Shrine that houses the tomp of the Imam Ali Riza - so it is said - by Cliph Al Mamum, the successor of the celebrated Harun ar-Rashid, who is also buried in the town, Mashhad was founded in 817, on the death of the Imam Ali Riza. In the 18th century, under the reign of Nadir Shah, it was the capital of the country.

One can assume that the rugs formerly called 'Khorasan' were mainly made in Mashhad or nearby. Herat, which today is a part of Afghanistan but in the mid 19th century was the capital of the Khorasan, gave its name to rugs of the typically Persian style decorated with designs which became known as herati. This type of design has become widespread as far away as the region of Sultanabat. Mashhad has remained an Iranian town without western influence and is famous in Iran for the excellence of its rugs.
