History: Isfahan

           Standing 1570 m above the sea level , Isfahan is 414 km south of Tehran. This world-famous-city with many historical buildings , bridges and eye-catching places , is one of the most uniqe tourist attractions in Iran. The city enjoys temperate climate and four equal seasons. No obstacles exist as far as 90 km north of Esfahan and cool northern winds blow in this direction. Dating back to about 2500 years ago , Isfahan has been the capital of Iran in three historical periods. The golden age of Isfahan was in the Safavid (1501-1736).
 
      Isfahan carpets are amongst the best of Persian carpets and are as hard wearing as they are decorative. Choice examples are a good investment, especially old and antique pieces which can still be found on the market.  The overall color effect of the new Isfahans is pale, beige or light blue. However, sometimes as many as fifteen colors are used for contrast and outlines, including several different red shades. There are numerous, very intricately drawn and precisely executed patterns; floral shapes and arabesque tendril work predominate as well as realistically drawn birds, flowers, palmettes and rosettes. Carpets have central, multi-lobed medallians or less frequently, repeat patterns. A large Shah Abbas border generally predominates; other floral border desgins are taken from the field. Field and borders are clearly separated, often by between two and five minor borders and guard stripes.
