History: Hamadan

       Hamadan, the chief town of the province of the same name, takes it's roots from ancient Medean capital Ecbatana. Being one of the Achaemenid capitals, it was a sumptuous town, whose treasures and roofs of gold and silver became legendary. Hamadan is the oldest royal city of Iran.
    Today, Hamadan is one of the Iran’s larger cities, and has been an important commercial and administrative center for many centuries.
    As a weaving center, Hamadan is without equal for the sheer bulk of its output, although the weaving originates in the district’s 600 villages rather than in the city itself. The city production dating back to the period just before World War I.
    Hamadan rugs are characterised by bold bright colours often derived from vegetable dyes, geometric designs and a style of weaving which partly exposes the warp threads on the reverse of the rug. The weaving is solid and robust. The pile is generally wool, the warps and wefts cotton. The weavers are very fond of primary colours - greens, reds, and blues, and often use the undyed black, white and brown wool from sheep.
