13 x 8 inch (33 x 20 cm) sheet on wich ther ea re two wood-block prints: a small view of the town of Niclaushausen (Niklahausen) and a map of Bavaria from Augsburg to Regensburg to Passau. The map is 3 x 5.5 inches (8 x 14 cm) with North to the left. Other place names include Salzburg, Munch en, Nurmberg, the Iser River, the Danube River and Strubingen. Verso is a wood-cut of a miner. Niclaushausen is mentioned I believe in regard to a peasant uprising that occurred there in the late 15th century. There is also a simple coats of arms in the lower left. Overall VG+
Source of this plate is Munster’s COSMOGRAPHIA. As the date of this plate is uncertain, I am using the 1578 as this was the last printing in the old style by Henri Petri. This is clearly not the later Sebastian Pertri "in the copper-plate manner" style wood-block. Sebastian Munster (1489-1552) was one of the three cartographers who dominated the 16th century, the other two being Mercator and Ortelius. Moreland & Bannister state that COSMOGRAPHIA "undoubtedly must have been one of the most widely red books of its time." As such, Munster had a wide influence on the cartography of his time as well as that of succeeding generations.
