c1710 Covens & Mortier/Jaillot "Carte Particuliere des Postes de France
An apparently single folio page map that is more normally found co-joined and done by Sanson—whose name appears on this maps--- or Jaillot.. This plate is 13 x 24 inches (33 x60 cm) on a larger sheet. It is a copper plate engraving and has full original color to the map and later color to the decorative cartouche and (possibly) the border.. While this is ½ of the original postal map, it has border on all four sides and contains the decorative cartouche; in short, it is a stand alone map of the southern half of France (Gascogne, Roussillon, Provence, Guienne, Savoy, Dauphin and Auvergne).
A very clean example with nice topographic detail and many towns and villages shown. Postal routes indicated with every stop/way station noted. Full title is "Carte particuliere des Postes de France/Par sr Sanson, Geographe Ordinaire du Roy/A Amsterdam/Chez Iean Covens et Corneille Mortier/Avec Privilege". Overall VG with a marginal light waterstain upper left corner just entering the map at the "Mer de Gascogne". Centerfold, as issued. Jaillot published this map ( in the double page format) in 1696 at Paris; another version was done in 1705 at Amsterdam by Jean Covens. I could not find this exact version of the map in any research by me, but believe it was later than the previous two mentioned.
