c1750 map of the City Dendermonde (Dendermond)

14 x18 inch (36 x46 cm) Black and white engraved map done for R Tindal’s “Continuation of Mr. Rapin’s History of England.” Engraved by I. Basire. Two vertical folds (as issued). Overall VG with a few repaired edge tears, none entering a printed surface. An example with modern color sold at auction in 2007 for $112.00.

The full title is “Plan of the city of Dendermonde, and the manner in which it was blocked by the troops of the Allies.” The time was 1706. The Allies were the English and Dutch and the city was held by the French. Under the Duke of Marlborough, the city was severely damaged, but taken by them. The Austrians then fortified the city against further French attempts to capture it. Dendermonde is in East Flanders and is named for the Dendre River, a tributary of the Schelde River(Scheldt). This nap has a lovely inset “Prospect of the City of Dendermonde” which is a nice birds-eye view. Though the fortifications have long been demolished, a “Google Earth” look shows that the city center sill conforms in general to the plan of this map.
