As
American railway pioneers, the modest New England Yankees have been
strangely overlooked. Much has been made of the first Baltimore and
Ohio train and of the early locomotives in other states, but the truth
is that New England men have been among the greatest railroad builders
and operators in all America.
Look, for example, at this record of “firsts"
• The first railroad in America was a horse-operated line out of Quincy
MA.
• The first design for a sleeping car was made by a Massachusetts man,
thirty-five years before Pullman.
• The first vestibule train was operated in Connecticut in 1857.
• The first ambitious tunneling project in the country was the
construction of the Hoosac Tunnel in 1855.
• The first three transcontinental railroad lines were built, run and
financed by New Englanders.
The struggles, successes and failures of these pioneers, as told in
STEELWAYS OF NEW ENGLAND, will prove unexpectedly colorful and, in the
perspective of time, amusing, to those reading their story for the
first time. Alvin F. Harlow is particularly well suited to the job of
being their historian, for it is his belief that history need never be
dull: when kept down to earth, treated as the story of people rather
than governments and spiced with accounts of the quirks of human
character, it is fascinating. Now, in STEELWAYS OF NEW ENGLAND, the
reader encounters his unstudiedly vivacious, anecdotal style of history
at its best.
