Learn About Turkmen Rugs
|
 |
 |
|
The majority of the TURKMEN tribe of Iran lives in the north and northwest sections of Iran. Marco Polo said in the 13th century, "Here they make the most exquisite and beautiful rugs in the world." The Turkmen tribe has handwoven rugs for many centuries. Rug weaving is one of the oldest arts in Turkmenistan and the surrounding regions such as Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and the Province of Khorassan. Archeological data places carpet making in the territory of Turkmenistan as early as the 6th century BCE. The remains of a carpet found by archeologists in the 1940's at Altai is two-thousand five hundred years old. It took centuries for these designs to develop, and the decoration of the carpets is extremely original, reflecting stylized articles from the world of nomadic livestock-breeders. Ornaments are geometric, and a love of deep, rich red is an artistic tradition of the carpets. The art of carpet weaving passed from generation to generation, and today one can single out several types of Turkmen carpets, each having distinctive ornamentation. Turkmen are not only famous for their beautiful rugs, but also for their famous Akhal-teke horses. These horses originate from the Turkmen Sahara (Desert) in northeastern Iran and have been used as cavalry mounts and racehorses for thousands of years. The Turkmen tribe live in many sections of Iran. All Turkmen rugs and carpets have geometric patterns. The repeated "Gul" motif is the main indication of Turkmen rugs. The quality of Turkmen rugs and carpets varies. Older rugs (pre-1945) are very good, but some of the newer rugs are dyed with chemicals rather than vegetable dyed. These rugs come in different sizes, but the majority are small (2x3 to 4x6 feet). You can also find mid-sized rugs ranging with dimensions from 4x6 to 8x10 feet up to larger sizes. Dark reds is the dominant color in Turkmen rugs and carpets. You rarely will find blue backgrounds. These rugs and carpets are made of a soft wool and have a thin, tight pile. The warps of the foundation are mostly cotton; the wefts are wool. Weavers in Turkmenistan use Turkish knots. Turkmen rugs are among the finest quality tribal rugs.

The Persian rug is a tradition
that has survived for a period of over 2500 years. Each Persian
rug is a new flower blossoming from one of the biggest
branches of an ancient and colorful yet damaged tree which is
the Persian culture . Persian people are very tradition oriented
and this characteristic can be seen in the way they make their
rugs . Each village or city in Iran has an ancient and
traditional rug pattern that has been maintained in that region
for centuries and sometimes millenniums. The distinct designs of
each city are particular to that city alone and although famous
designs have been imitated elsewhere in the country a few times
, they have never been duplicated. Iran is also the place where
many other styles of rugs are made, such as Turkish, Caucasian,
Armenian, Kazak, Afghanistan & India. The
Persian rug is a big chapter in the book of Iran's culture
because it visually shows the biggest obsessions in Persian
culture, which are the beauty of nature, literature, and true
love. These are what make the Persian rug on
of the most prestigious things to be placed in any home. |

KPSI: ( knot per Square inch ) the number of knots per linear
inch along the warp and
the weft tell us what is the KPSI in one rug. You multiply both
numbers on the warp and the weft from back of the carpet. For
example 10 knots along the warp and 12 knots along the weft would
give a KPSI of 120. RAJ is the number of knots on warp or weft
per 7 linear centimeter. Persian rugs usually count with RAJ
instead of KPSI. But for your convenience we use KPSI
here. keep in mind higher KPSI does not necessarily
mean a better quality rug. the number of kpsi is only depended on
technique of the weave. |

Described rug condition is based upon the age of the rug.
Perfect and excellent condition does not necessarily mean a full pile as in a
brand new rug. In an older rug, it can mean not showing the
foundation and having some pile. And also, keep in mind that some types of rugs
don't have a thick pile even when they are brand new.
