C.) and the Warring States (475-221 B. C.), Lu Ban the master carpenter added some ingenious mechanism into padlocks. From the Eastern Han Dynasty (A. D. 25-220), people began to make splitting spring padlocks. In Tang Dynasty (A. D. 618-907), locks were usually made of gold, silver, copper, iron, or wood. And in Ming Dynasty, locks were divided into four categories: broad padlocks, pattern padlocks, necklace padlocks and shackle padlocks. After the development during Qing (1644-1912), the Republic of China (1912-1949), locks became more delicate and complicated and full of connotation of culture. They bear many good wishes, such as ranked top in the imperial examination, longevity and richness, blessed with many descendants by kirin, prosperity brought by the dragon and phoenix, and so on. Some locks were made in the shape of fish, because people think that fish sleeps with eyes open, and so it guards the house at any time. Ancient locks are also a symbol of fortune, there is such a saying "Use donkey to carry the key and horse to carry the lock", that means to be very rich. And locks are also esteemed to be the representation of health, and many other good wishes.
