Professional gallery framed as well in lovely wood picture frames . Chinese ancestor portraits are a tradition that date back to the 16th century. Painted on large scrolls, they were precious family heirlooms that ensured a family’s continued good fortune. Today, we admire these paintings for their luxurious costumes and sophisticated opulence. In times past in china, certain aristocratic and or wealthy families wanted to preserve the history of the family lineage , not just in word, but also as beautiful and useful family portrait or ancestor paintings. These paintings would help keep the family name alive for forthcoming generations. These paintings could also be placed in the hall or ancestral temple of the family, where younger generations could show honor to their family and their ancestors on joyous or special occasions. Wherever placed, these paintings demonstrated the household honor. The artists and their apprentices would make the colored pigments from natural components such as minerals and would use true gold to gild the paintings. The portrait would be realistic and life like, characteristic of the painting style of the period, and also characteristic of class distinction, and portrayed the people in period costumes. Truly fine works of early chinese art . They are both 22 3/4 inches by 16 1/2 . Both have a discoloration at the top right corner and the emperor also has a tiny discoloration at top left , nothing of any great affect to overall display as you can see . They are both in quite excellent overall condition otherwise for pieces of this great age . Kentucky Buyers Must Add 6 % Sales Tax To Bid or Purchase Amount Unless You Have a Resale Tax Number.
